P6 Science Chapter 5: The Web of Life

Population = group of organisms living & reproducing in a place

Habitat = Place where populations live in

Community = Different Populations living in a habitat

A. Types of communities:
  • Garden

~ Butterfly, Caterpillar, Bees, Earthworms, Spiders, Ants, Snails, Trees,etc

  • Pond

~ Arrowhead, Water Snail, Cabomba, Tadpole, Guppy, Water Lily, Dragonfly, Duckweed, Water Hyacinth, Hydrilla, Pond skater, Great Diving Beetle, Mosquito Larva & pupa,etc

  • Leaf Litter

~ Dark & Damp

~ Earthworm, Millipede, Woodlouse, Centipede, Snail, Mosquito ,etc

  • Rotting Log

~Dark & Damp

~FUngi, mosses, ferns, centipedes, wood scorpions, slugs, woodlice, termites,etc

  • Seashore

~Wet & sandy

  • Single Plant

~Snails, Ants, Spiders, Squirrels, Birds, Fungi

B. Producers & Consumers

Plants are producers and animals are consumers.

C. Predators & Prey

Animals that hunt are predators and animals that are being hunted are preys.

D. Decomposers

Bacteria & Fungi are decomposers. (They don't make music). They feed on dead plants & animals & break them down into simpler substances such as mineral salts & carbon dioxide. More examples: Woodlice, Termites, Vultures, Millipedes, Houseflies.
