P3 Science Chapter 12: The Skeletal & Muscular system @ 12:23 PM

P3 Science Chapter 12: The Skeletal & Muscular system
Our skeleton:
  • consists of 206 bones
  • supports our body and gives us a definite shape(we can't be compressed)
  • allows us to stand upright (That's why ur spine is V.Important)
  • Protects delicate organs (e.g. Lungs, Heart, Liver, etc)
SCIENCE FACTS:

Some animals, such the jellyfish,do not have a skeleton. Earthworms have liquid skeletons.(Urgh!)

We have 350 bones when we're born. As we grow older, some bones join together, such as the bones in our skull and spine. Thus, when we become an adult, we have about 206 bones in our body only !

# Skull
:
  • gives our heads a shape (I can't imagine a head having a hexagonal shape)
  • protects the brain
  • actually consists of 29 bones in total
# Shoulder blade:
  • Is a flat bone with a broad triangular surface.
  • Attached to the rib cage by muscles

# Backbone/Spine:
  • Supports the skull
  • Protects the spinal cords
  • The spine consists of 26 irregularly shaped bones called vertebrae
  • The vertebrae are separated by soft cushions called intervertebral discs.
# Ribs:
  • Protect the heart
  • Protect the lungs
  • protect the main blood vessels
  • Gives our body its shape
# Pelvis
  • Supports the weight of the body
  • Protects the important organs in our lower abdomen(all of you know what is it)
1. Joints:
  • Immovable (fixed in place e.g. Skull)
  • Slightly Movable (allow small movements e.g. Ribcage and spine)
  • Movable - ball-and-socket joint(arms),hinge joint(leg),pivot hinge(neck)
2. Muscles:
  • Smooth muscles: UNCONTROLLABLE(e.g. Stomach,Gullet)
  • Special Heart muscle
  • Muscles over our bones:CONTROLLABLE
# Muscles in our neck
  • supports our head and allow it to move
# Muscles in the shoulders
  • Keep our shoulders straight
  • Help our arms to move
# Muscles in the arms
  • Allows us to bend our arms or away from our body
# Muscles in the stomach
  • Allows us to sit up or bend over our body (Relate this to our sit ups during NAPFA test)
# Muscles in the thighs
  • Help us to bend, twist or straighten our legs.
