P3 Science Chapter 11: The Human Digestive System

Definition:The process of breaking down food into simpler substances

Consists of:Mouth,Gullet,Stomach,Small Intestine

~Often misconception:Large intestine is part of the digestive system.WRONG!Digestion ends at the small intestine.

1) Mouth (Including teeth)

->Food that enters our mouth breaks into smaller pieces.

-> Saliva is produced to break down and soften the food and lump it together, making it easier for swallowing.

->The teeth will chew food into small pieces that can be swallowed.

-> The front teeth - incisors and canines cut and tear pieces off food

->The back teeth are the large molars that grind and mash large pieces of food.

->There are 20 milk teeth and 32 larger permanent teeth.

2) Gullet

->It contracts to force the food to the stomach.

-> No digestion takes place here.

3) Stomach

->Digestive juice + churning action = break down food into simpler substances

-> Is a muscular bag that can be stretched and expanded. When fully expanded, it can send signals to the brain that it is full.

-> Food usually remains in our stomach for 3 to 4 hours before it is released slowly into the small intestines.

4) Small Intestine

->More digestive juices are added to break it down further

->Blood vessels absorb digested food that passed through intestine walls

->Digested food carried to other parts of body (Happy ending alrdy?Sadly, NO)

->Food is completely digested here to form simple substances that are small enough to pass through the internal surface and enter tiny blood vessels.

5) Large Intestine

->Undigested food is passed here (I know, Poor "LI" T_T)

->Water and substances called mineral salts are absorbed & it becomes faeces and leaves the body through the anus.

* Extra Information !!

# Liver

  • Is an organ that receives blood directly from the small intestines.
  • Besides controlling the amount of simple substances in the blood, the liver also removes waste materials from the blood before it travels to the rest of the body.
# Rectum
  • A part if the large intestine
  • Stores our undigested food (your poo) before it is passed out of our body.
