(Note from Lyn: Since everyone knows classification, I believe there's no need for me to nag ^^)

P6 Science Chapter 2: Forces of Energy & Conversion

Definition: ability to do work

Source of energy = place where energy come from

Examples of sources: Fuels - Coal, Wax, Petrol, Petroleum, Oil, Natural Gas

Forms of energy:
  • Electrical energy - come from power stations, batteries

  • Solar energy - come from Sun

  • Potential energy - Chemical, Elastic

  • Kinetic Enegy - present in moving objects

  • Light energy - come from Sun, bulbs, etc

  • Heat energy

  • Sound energy - caused by vibration

Energy Conversion

Electric Circuit:

Chemical Potential Energy -> Electrcial Energy -> Light + Heat Energy

Winding toy Car:

Elastic potential Energy -> Kinetic Energy

Energy converts from one form to another and can never be destroyed now, and NEVER WILL IT BE DESTROYED.

ENERGY

Cannot be destroyed/created, converted from 1 form to another

Forms of Energy:

1. Light energy

~Sources: Sun, stars, lamps, fire

~Non-sources; Moon, Mirror, Water, Metals

2. Heat energy

~ Tempearature is a measure of hot/cold an object is

~Heat energy travels by conduction

~ Heat energy travel through liquids and gases through convection

~Heat energy travels through space by radiation

3. Electrical energy

4. Kinetic enrgy

~ Amt. of kinetic energy an object has depends on:

  • Speed
  • Mass

5. Potential energy

  • Chemical – stored in food & fuels
  • Gravitational – stored in objects suspended in air
  • Elastic - stored in stretched rubber bands & wound-up strings
