P5 Science Chapter 3: Reproduction in Plants

Purpose: Ensure continuity of their own kind

Types: seeds, spores, leaves, underground stem, underground roots,suckers



Flower Parts: (male) Stamen - anther,filament

(female) Pistil - stigma, style, ovary, ovule


  • Style: connects stigma to ovary

  • Stigma: receives pollen grains

  • Ovule: COntains egg nucleus

  • Filament: Support to anther

  • Anther: contains pollen sacs that produce pollen grains

Pollination



  • pollen grains are transferred form the anther to the stigma

  • Self-pollination: Pollen grains of the anther land on the stigma of the SAME plant

  • Cross-pollination: Pollen grains of anther land on stigma of a DIFFERENT plant

  • Wind-pollinated: light & feathery

  • Insect-pollinated: Attractive and colourful, full of nectar

Fertilisation

  • When a pollen grain lands on a stigma, a pollen tube forms.
  • Once the pollen tube reaches the ovary, the male cell fuses w/ the female egg cell.
  • Ovules develp iinto seed,ovary enlarge into fruit, petals drop off

Seed Dispersal

  • Overcrowding may occur where young plants compete for sunlight, water, nutrients & space
  • Ways of seed dispersal: Wind, Water, Animal, Splitting

1) Wind

  • Wing like structures (e.g. Angsana, Shorea)
  • Fruits have fine hairs, helping them float (e.g. Lalang, Dandelion)
  • Seeds are small & light (e,g, Orchid, Grass)

2) Water

  • Have Fibrous Husks (e.g. Coconut, Pong pong, Mangrove, Lotus)

3) Animal

  • Fleshy & Juicy fruits, seeds are inedible
  • Fleshy & juciy fruits, seeds are swallowed & passed out as droppings
  • Fruits have hooks that stick onto fur and clothes of humans(e.g. Mimosa, Love Grass)

4) Splitting

  • Fruits split open w/ explosive force (e.g. Rubber, Balsam)
  • Fruits split open w/o explosive force (e.g. African Tulip, Kapok)

Germination

  • each seed is surrounded by a seed coat which protects the seed
  • seed leaves provide the seed with foos until its first leaves appear

1) Roots appears and grows downwards, holding the young plant firmly to ground & absorb water

2) Shoots frows upwards to get sunlight & air.

3) Shoot straightens & green leaves open up, able to phtosynthesize now

4) Young plant becomes adult plant, produces flowers, pollinate & fertilise & develop fruits

5) Fruits & seeds are dispersed

Reproduction from spores

  • non-flowering plants reproduce from spores (e.g. Bird nest's fern,ladder fern)
  • Mushrrom, toadstool, mould reproduce from spores

Reproduction from Other plant parts

  • Leaves (e.g. Bryophyllum, African violet, begonia)
  • Suckers(e.g. Banana, Heliconia, Pineapple, sugarcane)
  • Undergorund Stem (e.g. Potato, ginger, wtare chesnut, onion)
  • Undergorund Root (e.g. Carrot, sweet potato)
